RIVER ASSESSMENT
FIELD TEAM (RAFT)
Overview
The Los Angeles River runs 51 miles from its headwaters to the ocean, linking inland communities to the coast. Once a free-flowing river that supported rich ecosystems and communities, much of it has been transformed into a concrete channel built to move water quickly out to sea.
But the LA River is more than flood control infrastructure. It holds real potential to support wildlife, improve climate resilience, and create meaningful access to nature in the middle of a dense city.
Solutions
RAFT is LA Waterkeeper’s community science program, designed to reconnect people to the Los Angeles River while generating critical data about its health.
Through RAFT, volunteers work alongside our team to explore the river and collect water quality data, helping build a clearer picture of conditions across the watershed. This work makes scientific information more accessible and gives community members the tools to understand and advocate for a healthier river.
The program was created in response to river planning efforts that failed to prioritize ecology and community connection. By putting science directly in the hands of the public, RAFT helps ensure that future decisions are informed by both data and lived experience.
Today, RAFT focuses on expanding access to community science and lowering barriers to participation. Volunteers learn how to monitor key indicators like water quality and pollution, while building a deeper connection to the river and its role in the region’s water system.
By combining hands-on learning with data collection, RAFT is helping shape a more informed, engaged public, and a stronger foundation for restoring the Los Angeles River as a healthy, accessible, and resilient part of the city.
